Met Gala 2019: Everything You Need To Know, Plus A Best Dressed List

Every year on the 1st Monday in May the annual Costume Institute Gala is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. The fundraising event is one of the biggest in fashion, highlighting fashion and art in the form of an exhibition. It has been happening since 1948, making this the 71st anniversary.

The chairwoman of the event is Vogue’s Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour, who recruits her co-chairs. This year she chose Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Serena Williams and Harry Styles.

Each year the Gala has a theme, which is connected to the exhibition on display. This year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”

For those of you that don’t know what Camp is, and haven’t seen Ru Paul’s Drag Race, it’s an idea created by Susan Sontag in 1965, and is described as... “the love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration” and it was meant to resonate with our current cultural and political climate.

The official definition is a bit more clear… “a style or mode of personal/creative expression that is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of pop culture”.. thank you Merriam-Webster!

The guest list is made up largely of well-known Hollywood stars and fashion designers, who often invite the stars to the Gala and dress them. Tickets are $35,000 each and tables can cost from $200,000-$300,000.

The exhibits, which I have been going to for years, are so incredible and definitely worth visiting. This year’s exhibition will feature around 200 fine art and fashion pieces, tracing from all the way back to the 17th century down to the drag culture of current times.

So now that you know all the information, let’s take a look at who we think were the Best Dressed (in no order, and in terms of relevance to them):
