Just a month after the menswear shows, we bring you back to Milan Fashion Week AW19. This time for the women’s ready-to-wear collections to look at street style as models, influencers, buyers and editors descend on the Italian fashion capital once again.
From the 20th to 25th of February, the streets of Milan proved to be a place to preview the biggest trends of the next season. With Italian fashion houses like Gucci, Versace, and Prada taking centre stage on the show schedule, you know the street-style crowd will pull out some exceptional looks for the front row.
Street style is unique to each city. In New York, the freezing cold weather tends to dictate practicality, whereas London is a colourful mish-mash of boho and neon; Paris prefers all black and Milan is always a beautiful elegant surprise. Luckily for those without a “front row seat”, there was as much to see off the runway as on it. Naturally, a lot of Italian style dictators showed off their personal interpretations of Spring/Summer’s key trends which meant that Milan’s streets were full of right-for-now style inspiration.

THINK GREEN
Let’s be honest, this month we’ve seen tons of colour and endless palette combinations on the streets of the major fashion capitals. Milan Fashion Week has been no different and we couldn’t be happier to leave it to the fashionistas in Milan to give us a master class in how to refine the colour choice!
Olive, army, mint… green has proved to be the obvious colour of the moment, according to showgoers at Milan Fashion Week. From an eye-catching neon to an equallypoppy pastel, the street style crowd went all in on the vibrant hue showing inspired suiting, floaty mini-dresses and micro bags off.
There were chunky knits and tie-dye fleeces that blended the Shrek-like shade with a vivid turquoise, as well as breezy green blouses and sculptural blazers. Some paired the colour with sleek leather jackets and bright bottoms in blue, some embraced the green in head-to-toe suiting combinations and boiler-suits and others went for a little fresh neon touch in a form of mini bags.
GOING OUT-OUT
Statement outerwear is a bang on trend. Coats and puffer jackets were pretty much the wardrobe must during all fashion weeks this month and were showcased by the style influencers in endless variations to match anyone’s taste and aesthetics. The most popular choices in Milan were patterned coats, colorful faux fur and all-over prints.
The city streets offered excellent colour, pattern and texture inspiration when it came to stating your personality through the outerwear piece; including pink teddy bear jacket, long plaid coat, bright oversized tailored jacket… Throw it on and be your true self!
A WOMAN’S WORK IS NEVER DONE
This week in Milan, it was all about utility with pockets on everything, thanks to Fendi. We saw pockets on a Fendi purse, a jacket, a teddy-bear coat, and even a belt with clips and pockets to hold gloves, sunglasses, and a phone- so practical!
Workwear-inspired designs were noticed in all the major fashion capitals throughout the month. Apart from utility-worker belted jackets and trousers, a piece that stood out is a boiler suit, which has been going strong for a few seasons.
Once a garment worn by women who stepped into men’s labour and started appropriating masculine elements while toiling in factories, it is now a fashionable and effortless choice with a great variety of cuts, colours, and materials delivered in the off-catwalk scene. Full-denim, all shades of khaki and beige - monochrome earth tones colourways dominated the trend while leaving freedom to choose your personal favourite according to the individual style.
FOLLOW MONO-SUIT
Oversized tailoring? Check. Suits have become quite the street style staple over the past few seasons, and we've seen this two-piece ensemble in a variety of styles, from candy-colored versions to boasting all-over prints. The suit's latest iteration is a super-slouchy silhouettein earthly tones,usually paired with chunky sneakers or elegant heel for a more feminine and sophisticated look.
The idea of androgynous power dressing is trendier than ever, and a modern take on a classic business look has proved to never get boring being represented in multiple variations.
Interpreting the traditional suiting for their street walk, the showgoers had fun with the detailing and accessories to the joy of ladies who want to feel powerful and yet feminine and playful this season.
With sophisticated tailoring in modest colours, women have a great amount of flexibility no matter what time of day or the situation it is.
MODERN PRINCESS
A modern princess theme has indeed won the streets of Milan.
While sorbet shades are the easiest way to get into the spring spirit when paired with mint green and pale pink for a pretty look, the influencers also went for bold colour palettes creating impactful all-black and earth-tone silhouettes.
Some showgoers proved that voluminous skirts can look smart, teaming them with tailored jackets and coats, while others presented the cool side of it while pairing them with bomber colourful jackets and sneakers.
Hyper-feminine silhouettes were on display in numerous collections with voluminous dresses, low-hem gowns, multiple fabric layering, floaty cuts, supersized bows and ruffles head-to-toe. The idea of a Victorian-era aristocracy with the millennial energy twist also resulted in statement puff shoulders on dresses and tops.
FOLK IT UP!
Talking about the accessory of the week that added a little touch of personal flair to multiple looks, think scarves. Not only silk scarves were spotted to compliment the looks and serve as a styling touch, but scarves were spread all over the body as skirts and tops with eye-catching prints all over.
The bright patterns referenced various themes, adding elegance and modern effortless to the look.
With a notion of extreme femininity on the rise, the ladylike scarf print is no longer associating with the ‘brunching ladies’ or Russian grandmas. With the endless ways to tie a scarf, designers used the opportunity to play with the smooth feminine silhouettes on the body.
