Refashioning Men: Effeminacy

Generation Z is finding new ways to redefine masculinity, and fashion is one of them

The masculinity definition is being reformulated by the newer generations, and the Fashion industry is listening. Boys that wear pearls necklaces with flared pants and painted nails; brands that are becoming more inclusive and non-binary with their products. As the generation demands the industry delivers.

The uncommon diversity in clothing for men is coming to an end. Males have begun to adopt more feminine trends; coming to a point where men’s fashion is more about expressing oneself regardless of their sexuality. Therefore fashion is becoming more neutral in order to catch up.

Men have been conditioned to reject everything that gives them a semblance of femininity because is often associated with gender or sexual orientation. Men who dared to show their feminine side tend to be viewed as flamboyant, gay, queer, or drag. The way someone displays themselves has nothing to do with their sexual orientation.

Maleness, stoicism, strength, sexual behavior, and general dominance are all considered masculine traits. This “traditional” definition is harmful and strict. By instead encouraging guys to love themselves and develop emotional intelligence, we encourage them to hide them to show strength.

“We need a new definition of masculinity - a definition rooted in sensitivity, compassion, and capacity for emotion” Rex Woodbury: Redefining Masculinity

Our next-generation, Generation Z, will be in charge of defining future masculinity. Generation Z has the reputation for being progressive and open-minded, as well as sexually and gender fluid, then millennials are. Their flexible conception of gender will pervade more areas of our culture as they grow older.

Celebrities are also adopting more effeminate appearance, by embracing female characteristics and disregarding gendered sexual behavior norms. There are many celebrities who identify as non-binary and feel like they don’t fit into a strictly “male” or “female” box. This new generation has a concept of beauty with a non-binary approach altogether.

Younger generations have the difficulty of not having a template to follow or not being able to look back at prior generations and identify with them. Hence they use social media as a space for marginalized people to express themselves.

Influencers have taken into themselves to educate the world about men’s embracing their feminine side. Becoming the mirror of men in younger generations.

At this moment men’s fashion shows more of a feminine side of masculinity, providing a basis for future male fashion. This tendency contributes to pushing gender norms and blurring gender distinctions in the fashion industry. Hopefully, it does not just remain a trend but develops a new definition of masculinity.
